About Rupert's Craft
During my art studies at St. Martin’s and Byam Shaw, I became drawn to creating mechanical forms—particularly those that echoed the structure and movement of the human body.
One of my earliest works was a chair whose backrest was inspired by the human spine, reinterpreted as a series of interlocking wooden blocks. I’ve long been fascinated by the skeletal system’s ability to derive strength from numerous small, connected elements, and this has influenced my ongoing exploration of human armature through a variety of materials.
It was this fascination that led to the development of my ‘wooden block’ chairs, marking the beginning of a deeper investigation into cellular structures—and how a flexible, skin-like surface might hold liquids in place while maintaining form. These early studies continue to inform my work today.
